Mother's, Grad's, Brides & (hand) Bags

What else could the Month of May possibly include????? ...family birthdays, our wedding anniversary, annual lake trip, packing the kiddos for camp... Needless to say, there is not a lot of time to spare.
Like most families (or maybe it is just me) I always want to capture a family kodak moment during these events. This includes me shopping all around town & the internet to find color complementary clothes for a family of 5 or more (depending on who all I can drag in the photo room:). It takes a little preparation a head of time & usually several last minute runs to the mall. However, it is a labor of love AND you all are in luck because I planned our pictures over Easter weekend this year so I could focus on my upcoming anniversary. I won't bore you with all the details but believe me when I say we looked GREAT! I have never received more complements from complete strangers raving about our outfits. I am in love with navy & white polka-dots this spring & that is where the search began. Added a touch of yellow & I was lucky enough to find most of the pieces locally. Macy's, JC Penney's, & Banana Republic at Woodland Hills is where I found the majority of the pieces with the best prices. Gotta love a bargain!
MOTHER'S DAY
Okay back to the point, one of them anyway. Mother's Day is on May 12th. It is the 2nd Sunday in May fella's. DO NOT FORGET!
Moms are easy peasy. All we want is to feel appreciated & loved...followed by looking or feeling pretty. Most moms would prefer something homemade or heartfelt from their kids. It truly is the thought that counts. By that I mean the thought or lack there of you put into it. So be creative! And for those who don't have a creative bone in your body, here are a couple of ideas.
* Initial Bracelet / Charm Bracelet / Pendant necklace - something with a symbol or message that means something to her. James Avery & Fossil has a great selection of mementos to choose from.
*Jazz up her curio cabinet with Swarovski crystal figurines or you can even bling up her smartphone (LOVE) or tablet cover. I personally would die for these sunglasses.
GRAD'S
Now for our graduate. Whether it be high school or College, your graduate will be deserved of a well earned gift. (Deserv-ed??? is that a word??? well, anyway...) Give them something useful that they will appreciate & probably can't afford on their own. Being an artistic person myself I LOVED receiving a portfolio to keep all my designs together. As well as any tools that I needed to further my craft. Also, if it is your college grad that will be heading into the work force setting them up with some wardrobe essentials would be awesome. A mall giftcard is a great start!
The past several years I have been asked by parents to make custom t-shirt blankets made from all their kids school t-shirts/camp shirts/concert shirts, etc... It is a great memory maker as well as functional. Also, a shadow box to keep their tassel & diploma in makes for a great keepsake.
BRIDE'S
Brides to be... Just stick to the list. Weddings are beautiful & romantic & everything lovely, However, for the Bride it can be an extremely stressful day. All the bride & groom want is ...well...exactly that....what THEY want. Unless you are making something personalized or passing down a gift of tradition through the family, try very hard to give the happy couple what they request. There are so many new registries out there (Dillards is a great store to shop at by the way) & all the cool cash gift ideas. My brother & his wife asked for cash to do extras on their honeymoon. I thought that was very cool.
My husband & I flew off to Fiji to get married & have our honeymoon. It was FANTASTIC!! The best idea ever!! (It was mine:) And to top it off, there was a huge reception waiting for us when we returned. So I got to wear my dress TWICE & was still able to have a dance with my daddy. I will tell you though, just planning the reception was anxiety ridden. I had to be a hostess @ a party that was given for me. Now what kind of crazy is that???? We picked out a great meal that I didn't even get to eat because we were too busy thanking everyone for everything. I am very grateful it was video taped because I do not remember 90% of it.

Well (cough) handbags are just a necessity of life, as well as a fabulous gift for all three gift givings above YIPEE!!
I personally could buy every bag in a pastel color this spring, or
sherbet if I am feeling fancy. But the best thing about a handbag is that there is one out there for anyone. So many sizes, styles, fabrications. Ugh, I can smell the leather right now. Go get one...or FIVE.

I don't know about you but Black & Tan never sounded so good and I am NOT talking about the drink. Summer is coming & all I have been thinking about is the black & tan combo. Especially, when wanting something classy & casual to add to my wardrobe.
As you can see from my inspiration picture above the colors are just beautiful together. And I am not an advocate for tanning but this REALLY looks great on a tan body! I also have been trying to keep up with my nails (Men...you just don't know how easy you have it!) so that nail art is pretty awesome & not too crazy. Elegant Nails & Spa Avalon do a great job and will get as creative with your digits as you let them :)
As you walk the aisles of Woodland Hills Mall you will see this trend popping up on the walls or hanging on mannequins. White House/Black Market has a wonderful selection of dresses & Macy's shoe assortment is really rockin' right now. As I mentioned in my previous post (some might say) I go crazy for family pictures. Not in the sense that I have to take a hundred pictures every time we are together, rather, I put in a great deal of time to make sure we all look stylin' if you know what I mean?
Pictured is my inspiration board I put together so you can visually "see" what goes on in my mind. Scary I know, but don't go away just yet. There is a method to the madness. Thinking about the brown & white polka dot dress Julia Roberts wore while watching a polo match with Richard Gere I wanted that same sophisticated easy feeling that dress inspires. While on the search I came across the most beautiful navy & white polka dot dress {shown on the far right edge - middle dress} That was it. I had to have it. But as I continued scouring the internet I noticed that navy & white was a little harder to come by. I was going to have to include another color, then I saw it....the cutest toddler dress ever. It had everything I wanted & was priced just right!
Maybe you like navy & white mixed with red or pink instead of yellow. Whichever you prefer you can find something that suits your fancy. We actually wore a few of the items shown above (or a variation of) and the best part is about 98% of all of them are available at Woodland Hills Mall. Check out Bannana Republic, JCPenney, Macy's, & Dillards to name a few. If it wasn't in the actual store I purchased it online.

Soul mate or Sole mate???
Who said you can't have both in one?
This summer bulky is back & I LOVE LOVE LOVE all the textures & colors & mixed materials.
Espadrille, wedge or a combo of both? Woven or cork? Gladiator, or boot? Go nude or liven things up with bold colors? You REALLY can have it all!!
A favorite shoe style of mine is the wedge/espadrille. When mixed together all it means is a large wedge heel that is woven or made to look woven. Also, the peep toe pump....but that is a whole 'notha story!
You can find pretty much anything your heart desires online, but I personally love to go into a shoe store so I can touch (yes, I touch the goods) & smell the leather. And the biggest mistake one can make is that you purchase "the book by its cover". PLEASE PLEASE learn from my mistakes. Give the shoes a test drive. Just like a dress it can look ugly ON! AND your feet will thank you. Band-aides are NOT the new foot accessory!

Coach - Nice selection of really nice shoes, however plan to spend almost $200 on a pair. So make sure they make you look & feel like a super model!
Don't forget about Macy's, JC Penney's or Charlotte Russe. They also have a wide variety of beautiful shoes for any occasion on any budget!

Here are a few things to remember when buying shoes.
(Because it isn't really ALL about the look)
· Never buy shoes because they look pretty. If they hurt your feet now they are going to hurt your feet later. Don't count on breaking them in. 99% of the time it isn't going to work. And if you need to wear socks to hide the damage an ill-fitting shoe causes all the glamor is lost on the shoes or making you feeling like a Rock star wearing them. And isn't that the whole reason for buying them in the first place?

Size doesn't matter. I do not understand the mental block some women have about a shoe size. It correlates to NOTHING. Don't buy a shoe because they are on sale or because you think you can squeeze your piggy’s into them for one night. Most people wear the wrong size shoe. It is a fact! My family & I used to be those people. There is a reason they have foot sizers in every shoe store. Use them!! I have big feet. I can admit it. I wear a 9 or 9 1/2 depending on the shoe. After having kids my right foot got bigger. Crazy I know! However, I would much rather walk comfortably in a shoe than wear one that I can only put on for a moment before I regret the purchase.

Don't forget about your arches. I have a good solid arch:) If you are buying a pair of shoes that you will wear often, I strongly suggest buying a pair that has good arch support. Not everyone or every shoe is created equal neither will be your medical bills when you topple over from lack of support on your feet!

Alrighty then... I promised you peep toe shoes were "another story" so here it is!
As you can see by my inspiration picture above, there are so so many ways to wear peep toe shoes. However, the amount of "peep" is not created equal.
I am very particular about how much my little piggies hang out. I like just a little toe tease if you will. Not too much showing & not too little. I think 2-3 toesies peeking through is the perfect amount. I'm not all about full frontal toes at all! You know.... keep a little mystery ;)
Also, I love most peep toe shoes, however, (and I apologize upfront if I offend) I am NOT a fan of platform shoes ({cough}....stripper shoes) You know the ones that give a 2-3 inch lift so you can have an even taller heel. I know they have come a long way in the looks department & some may even qualify as "not soo ugly", but unfortunately, the first thought that comes to mind isn't "Wow, these would look great with my church dress!" Ultimately, there is too much sexual connotation surrounding platform heels & certainly more than necessary on any young adult or in any workplace...well...unless you work at a strip club ;)
I have a plethora of platform shoe examples that I think are acceptable at work or in a cocktail party environment. Also, great examples of what I never want to see another high school girl wearing in public! (Stay tuned for my next blog:)
Now that I got that out, go get yourself a pair or three. They are great warm weather shoe & go with pretty much anything.

I have always felt keeping something to the imagination is far sexier than just baring it all. So over the years teaching my girls that wearing a one-piece isn't the end of the world & them agreeing with me.... I think I am doing a pretty good job.
There is something to be said for modesty. I am not talking about wearing a burka or moo moo to the beach, but there are still some ladies out there that really aren't afraid to show it all off when well....really...we all know they shouldn't. So before your best friend tells you (a little white lie) that the string bikini you are trying to keep from popping off you like a broken rubber band "looks great!" take a look at some of these sexy coverage swimsuits & rethink that dental floss 2-piece you are trying to not hang out of.

I just wanted to give all our new fans a quick update on the mall;
Rio Nail Spa will open soon on the lower level next to jcpenney. Soma is now open in their new location on the lower level near Apple. Call it Spring and Vans are now open on the upper level in the Sears wing. Shoes City has relocated to the upper level next to Macy's. American Eagle is temporarily located on the upper level next to Eskimo Joe's. Their store expansion is underway and is expected to open in July. The Food court restrooms are now closed for remodel.
